The New Version of Drupal

A new version of Drupal represents not just updated code, but the collective effort of thousands of contributors from around the world. Each major Drupal release brings significant improvements in performance, usability, and developer experience.

Drupal 7, released in January 2011, marked a major step forward for the platform. Key improvements included:

  • Fields API integrated into core (replacing CCK for most use cases)
  • Improved admin interface with the Seven theme
  • Better performance and caching
  • Enhanced file handling and image styles
  • Completely revamped user interface for content editors
  • Stronger security architecture

The upgrade path from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 requires some work, particularly for custom modules and themes, but the improvements make the effort worthwhile for most projects.
